What are cookies?

Cookies are files that can be downloaded to your computer through websites. These tools have an essential role to provide numerous services within information society. Among others, they allow a website to store and recover information regarding the navigation habits of a user or his/her computer and, depending on the collected information, they can be used to recognise the user and improve the offered service.

Types of cookies

Depending on the organisation managing the domain sending the cookies and processing the collected data, two types of cookies can be distinguished:

  • Own cookies: those sent to the user’s computer from a computer or domain managed by the editor himself/herself and from which the service requested by the user is provided.
  • Third-party cookies: those sent to the user’s computer from a computer or domain that is not managed by the editor, but through another organisation that processes the data collected through the cookies.

If the cookies are installed from a computer or domain managed by the editor himself/herself but the information collected through them is managed by a third party, they cannot be considered own cookies.

There is also a second classification according to the period of time they remain stored at the client’s browser. Those can be:

  • Session cookies: designed to collect and store data while the user accesses a website. They are usually used to store information that it is only interesting to keep in order to provide the service requested by the user once (i.e. a list of acquired products).
  • Persistent cookies: the data remain stored at the computer and can be accessed and processed for a specific period of time by those responsible for the cookie. That period of time can span from several minutes to several years.

Finally, there is another classification with five types of cookies according to the purpose for which the collected data are processed:

  • Technical cookies: those that allow the user to navigate a website, platform or application and use the various options or services that exist in it, such as controlling the traffic and the communication of data, identifying the session, accessing parts of restricted access, remembering the elements that make up an order, executing the process of purchasing an order, applying to sign up or participate in an event, using safety elements during navigation, storing contents to divulge videos or sound, or sharing contents through social media.
  • Customization cookies: they allow the user to access the service with some general characteristics that have been predetermined according to a series of criteria in the user’s computer, such as the language, the type of browser used to access the service, the regional configuration from which the service is accessed, etc.
  • Analytics cookies: they allow the person responsible for them to follow up on and analyse the behaviour of the users of the websites they are linked to. The information gathered through this kind of cookies is used in the measurement of the activity of the websites, applications or platforms and to elaborate navigation profiles of the users of those sites, applications and platforms, in order to introduce improvements according to the analysis of the data regarding the use that the users make of the service.
  • Advertising cookies: they allow the management of the advertising spaces in the most efficient way.
  • Behavioural advertising cookies: they store information on the behaviour of the users, achieved through the continuous observation of their navigation habits, which allows to develop a specific profile to show advertising according to it.
  • Social media cookies: they are used for visitors to be able to interact with the content of various social platforms (Facebook, YouTube, twitter, LinkedIn, etc..) and so they are only generated for the users of said social networks. The terms of use of those cookies and the gathered information is regulated according to the privacy policy of the corresponding social platform.
