Description
The Story
Kaiku or lekeitiarra is a traditional coat from the Basque Country. The arrantzaleak (fishermen) used to wear it when fishing in the Bay of Biscay. It was made with a very dense wool fabric, perfect for the heavy northern rain and wind in the sea.
In the ‘20s, a new street version appeared and the amonak (grannys) started to make them for their grandchildren and children. It became the most popular coat in the Basque Country. Nowadays, it is about to disappear.
Fabric & care
- Composition: 100 % coated cotton
Cotton is the most common vegetable fabric. Cotton fabrics are breathable and absorb humidity and sweat. They are also very soft and resistant.
This fabric made of cotton has a special waterproof coating on the outside.
Care: To ensure not damaging the waterproof layer, do not clean or scrub the garment. Clean it by hand softly with a wet cloth. Iron from the inside.
Traceability and Sustainability
This time, we have collaborated with a hundred-year-old house called L’Artigue 1910 (from the French Basque Country), which has been able to reinvent the renowned ‘Linge Basque’, creating, for example, this waterproof, infallible and wrinkle-resistant fabric.
This garment has been made with loads of love by tailors and seamstresses in Basque Country.
