High-waisted unisex pants, fitted at the waist and inspired by those worn by men in the countryside and at sea, called “praka-mantala” for their characteristic front closure with buttons. Side zipper closure and 2 side pockets.

Eco-designed garment, customized using leftover remnants from our previous collections, inspired by the work clothes used more than 100 years ago in the Basque Country. For this reason, the garment you receive may not be exactly the same as the one in the photo.

Description

The history

The textile history in Bergara (Gipuzkoa) began in the 15th century, but in 1846 when the Fabrica de Hilados y Tejidos de Vergara (later Algodonera de San Antonio, then Tavexand now Evlox), was founded, it became the largest textile company in the history of the Basque Country.

Their blue dyed cotton fabrics were unrivaled, and soon the whole town became a large factory of the famous “Bergara blue fabric” used mainly for work wear.

In the 60’s the company specialized in De- nim fabric, and soon stood out worldwide with clients such as Levi’s Strauss. The company continued to grow and gradually lost the con- nection with Bergara, and at the same time stopped producing its famous blue fabric.

Global Organic Textile Standard
Fabric and care
  • Fabric composition: 100% organic cotton GOTS
  • *The front printed part is 100% polyester

Cotton is the most common vegetable fabric. This is due to its many properties. It is a very breathable fiber, and absorbs moisture and sweat. Cotton fabrics are also very soft, resistant and pleasant to the touch.

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the world’s leading standard for processing textiles made from organic fibers, which includes ecological and social criteria.

Care: Machine wash at 30º with similar colors. In the first wash the garment may shrink.

Traceability and Sustainability

In 2018 we started to investigate this story and discovered that the last company making the mythical Bergara workwear was going to close that year.

Inspired by the patches that were made in these work clothes, we have taken advantage of the textile remnants of our previous collections to customize this garment and give it a second life.

local and social production

The organic cotton fabric of this garment has been woven in Barcelona (Cataluña, Spain).

It has been made with love in one of our workshops in Zaragoza, less than 200km from our studio in San Sebastian.

The rest of the elements and trimmings are also locally sourced.
